 The Isthmus of Panama has been the subject of canal plans since 1534. After numerous failed attempts, the canal concept was suddenly understood in 1914.


2.    The Canal had around 1,000 ships pass through it in its inaugural year. In 2021, it increased to around 12,500.

The Panama Canal is a man-made waterway that spans the Panama Isthmus and connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is 40 miles long from shore to shore and is owned and managed by Panama. It takes roughly 10 hours for ships to travel from one side to the other and they can sail either way.

3.    A journey from New York to San Francisco that would normally take more than 13,000 miles (20,921 km) through South America and Cape Horn is reduced to just over 5,000 miles by the 51-mile (82-km) long Canal (8,047km)

5.    I commute from one ocean to the other every week, joining a small number of people who do so.


6.    There are 3 locks that elevate or descend passing vessels since the Pacific's sea level is slightly higher than the Atlantic's. Additionally, the tide movement on the Atlantic side is only 3 feet, whereas the Pacific entrance tide can rise as high as 16 feet (4.88m) (0.91m)

7.    The Panama Canal is one of the seven modern marvels of the world, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers.

8.    Since 1999, Panama has had total control over the Canal, which is the main source of income for my nation.

10.    The GAC Panama team organized crew changes for 2,380 seafarers and managed the movement of approximately 15 million gross shipping tonnes through the waterway in 2021.
