Researchers at Stanford University's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory are designing the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) camera with the aim of capturing the night sky in unprecedented detail.
The biggest digital camera ever developed, the LSST Camera is approximately 1.65 meters tall. By the end of 2024, the camera will be set up at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which is located atop Chile's Cerro Pachón.
The 3200-megapixel camera, that is roughly the size of a small SUV and has a lens with such a diameter of approximately 5 feet, is capable of recognizing a golf ball 15 miles away. Once completed, it will use the Rubin Observatory to acquire digital photos of the entire visible southern sky every several nights.
Incoming light from stars and other objects is captured by its 189 sensors, which convert it into electrical signals that may be converted into digital images. Each sensor is around 16 mm in size and has more pixels than a single iPhone 13. The camera's total resolution of 3.2 gigapixels enables it to snap photographs with a sufficient amount of detail to see a lunar dust particle. Its largest lens, which has a diameter of 1.57 m, is the largest lens of its kind ever created.
A shutter and filter-switching mechanism are characteristics of the digital camera. It is placed at the centre of the telescope, where optical vignetting (edge darkening) restricts the cross-sectional area and heat dissipation needs to be controlled to minimize thermal gradients from damaging the lens. With the lowest number of maintenance and downtime, the LSST camera will produce data of very high quality.
Two dynamic parts that were also recently installed are now being tested by the SLAC team: the camera shutter and the filter exchange system. Before the end of the year, the LSST camera will undergo one further alteration: the installation of an upgraded cooling system. The camera will then be finished and prepared for last-minute testing before being shipped to Chile in May next year
